New Season: Men’s Trends to Know for AW24

Feature: Long Read
Words by TONY WILKES

“It’s not like, ‘This season is about yellow,’” designer Jonathan Anderson was heard to say after his Autumn/Winter show. “It doesn’t work that way anymore.” He is, of course, right. Trends in their most traditional sense are, ironically, so last year. In their place, AW24 sees a move towards the timeless and elevated – what you might call ‘investments’. Classic menswear, underpinned by exceptional craft. Read on for the best of our latest arrivals, plus five key takeaways to nail dressing in style.

Think Tonal

There was brown at Lemaire. Dark red at Gucci. Beige and black at Fear of God. If there’s one styling tip to take from the AW24 shows, it’s monochrome. An outfit made of just one colour palette may seem like a shortcut –but like anything effortless, it takes skill. Opt for varying shades of a versatile neutral – think cream, brown and navy – built around contrasting weights and textures. A woolrollneck worn under a trench coat; a knitted polo under a bomber jacket, a crisp cotton shirt with a cashmere suit. Sleek, elevated and steeped in no-fuss polish.

Spotlight On: Bags

You’ve seen him on your commute. The chap who’s wearing the best outfit – only to fall short with a tired bag. (We’ve all been there.) When it comes to the best investment this season, you’re looking for one bag for all occasions: for the gym and the office, and the bar and restaurant. Translation? A quality hold-all or tote. The latest styles are bigger than ever, intended to carry all the items we need for our heavily laden lives. Check out the aptly named Croissant from Lemaire – returning this season to Harrods – plus sought-after options from Prada, LOEWE and The Row.

All-Weather Leather

Some items look so consistently good they transcend seasonal shifts in style. Enter: the leather jacket. Whether a slick biker or a classic aviator, sleek and understated or trimmed with shearling, these style stalwarts are warm, hard-wearing and charged with rebellious swagger. The quality, of course, comes down to the leather. Some of the best can be found at Zegna, Canali, Giorgio Armani and – with nearly two centuries of leatherworking expertise – LOEWE. Cared for properly, they’ll last you for decades.

The New Knitwear

The headline? Luxury isn’t quite so quiet. Defiant pattern and colour – especially in knitwear –is everywhere. But we’re not forsaking comfort. This translates into luscious fabrics, outsized proportions and heavier weights. Dries Van Noten’s in his final winter collection were standouts, as were those by Casablanca, JW Anderson and S.S.Daley. The latter, new to Harrods, has just seen investment from Harry Styles.

Spotlight On: Footwear

Let’s face it: in the cold wet of winter, white sneakers won’t cut it. What you need is a boot. Look to elevated iterations of heavy-duty hiking styles from LOEWE, Brunello Cucinelli and Zegna. Plus, keep an eye out for a new brand arrival: R.M.Williams has been crafting boots for the Australian outback for nearly a century. If you’re after something less outdoorsy, you can’t go wrong with a chunky Chelsea boot.
