Men’s Dress Codes for Summer Events

Feature: Quick Read
Words by Abigail Gurney-Read

Summer brims with events that put both diary planning and sartorial skills to the test. Almost as soon as the clocks spring forward do family occasions, garden parties and sporting fixtures rack up in their droves – each one requiring a wardrobe gear-change. So, whether you’re hitting Centre Court, Henley Royal Regatta, or a distant cousin’s Cotswolds wedding, sharpen your eye to the dress codes you’ll need to ride out the social season.

Summer Sophistication

While much of the British social season is rule-free in the wardrobe department, certain style parameters surround a few of its highlights. Morning dress is non-negotiable in the Royal Enclosure at Royal Ascot, while the Stewards’ Enclosure at Henley Royal Regatta calls for a lounge suit or blazer, smart trousers and tie or cravat. A similar philosophy applies if you’re wondering what a man should wear to a summer wedding – a bonus when you want your tailoring to work a little harder and your investment to go further.

Smart-Casual

Never have two words caused so much confusion. But dissect the smart-casual edict, and the instruction is simply one of balance. This means downplaying a dinner-suit or jacket in linen, upscaling denim jeans with a deeper wash or subbing in cream chinos. Smart-casual is the sartorial response to much of summer’s sporting calendar, too. Wimbledon has no official dress code, but you’ll still want to sharpen up if you’re seated at Centre or No.1 Courts. The majority of polo tournaments also operate a smart-casual policy, and many don’t require a tie. If you steer clear of neck furniture, deliver flair via other means – sunglasses, a pocket square or tasselled loafers.

Garden Party

Serpentine Summer Party or icy drinks and lawn games with friends, treat alfresco garden revels as opportunities to experiment with more daring garb. Mirroring the guestlist, outfits can read like a who’s who of international names to know – be it Gucci, TOM FORD or Casablanca. Underscore classic tailored shapes with eye-catching colour combinations and dandyish accessories, or employ floral prints to sow the seeds of interesting conversation among discerning crowds. Green-fingered brands such as Erdem and Etro put the ‘art’ in garden party attire.
