Schiaparelli: Up Close

Feature: Quick Read
Words by Sophia Miller

When Daniel Roseberry took the helm at Schiaparelli in 2019, he had an important task at hand. The Texas-born designer was to revive the haute couture maison for the 21st century, capturing the hearts and minds of fashion’s big hitters – all while staying true to the daring spirit of the late, great Elsa Schiaparelli.

To say Roseberry has delivered would be an understatement. The brand’s leitmotifs in gleaming Schiaparelli gold are now part of the fabric of modern fashion – the focus of our exclusive Crescent Windows pop-up this season, in which bijoux and accessories take centre stage in a setting inspired by last year’s sell-out exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. From archival themes to new, equally subversive house emblems, Schiaparelli’s iconography is best seen up close.

The Eyes Have It

The eye has been a Schiaparelli signature since 1937, appearing in various guises since – including brooches designed by Jean Cocteau and Salvador Dalí that now sit in fashion’s hall of fame. Bring a piece of history into your wardrobe with jewellery, bags and small leather accessories that peer at you with the same all-knowing look.

Through the Keyhole

Appearing on draped gowns and the focal embellishment of the new Schiap bag, the keyhole is an evolution of the brand’s emblematic Padlock, which first appeared in a Schiaparelli collection in 1935 where it debuted as the fixture of a handbag. Now, you’ll see it translated as jewellery, cut-outs, embroidery and beyond.

Trompe-l’Oeil Piercings

What could be more Schiaparelli than a wearable objet d’art that isn’t quite what it seems? As part of his mission to bring the maison’s irreverent spirit into the modern day, Daniel Roseberry took a fresh approach to trompe-l’œil accessories, unveiling finger rings, belts and brooches that emulate piercings.

Anatomy of an Icon

Reminiscent of Jean Cocteau’s sketches for Schiaparelli’s Autumn 1937 collection, this season’s stylised faces find their home on the Anatomy bags. Choose from sleek top-handle styles in glossy gold leather and origami-like Triple Face iterations in bold block shades. Their final flourish? A lining in a hue of shocking Schiaparelli pink.
