How to Decorate Your Table for Christmas

Feature: Short Read
Words By Bridie Newman

Nothing quite matches the memories made across the dinner table at Christmas. The heart of any festive get-together, the occasion calls for good food, great company and a suitably special tablescape. But how do you set the scene for showstopping seasonal cheer without ever compromising on style?

Our art director and experts from Harrods Interior Design have the answer. Here, they share their tips and style a table which 'elevates the maximalist layering trend with seasonal gold touches'. Because if you can’t go lavish at Christmas, when can you?

“Start with your table linens to set the tone,” our interior design experts share, “then build a colour palette around that, which can be seen here with the beautifully classic crockery set with a gilded rim, and gleaming gold cutlery and Christmas crackers.” It’s in part unapologetically traditional while also calling on contemporary references. Case in point: the clean lines of the candlesticks and tumblers alongside the curves of the scalloped-edged plates and ornate crystalware.

THE GRAND BANQUET

"Christmas is all about abundance and your tablescape should be no different. Layering table linens and crockery adds depth, while a table runner will connect your guests from one end of the table to the other, bringing everyone together."

Deck The Halls (And Your Table)

Once you’ve decided on your colour palette and tableware, turn to decorations to bring the scheme together. A natural place to start is the centrepiece. Our in-house experts have opted for an abundant, showstopping Christmas garland for our table runner, filled with twinkling baubles and festive dried fruits. Scatter the table with gold and glass candle sticks in varying heights for a glamourous profile with a warm, welcoming glow. And there you have it, a table fit for a yuletide banquet.

FINISHING FLOURISHES

“Carry the evergreen foliage from the runner through to the napkins with fresh rosemary sprigs from the garden, hand tied with a satin ribbon for a personal touch. Top tip: liven the rosemary up in a glass of water before you set the table. Bonus points if you also use them on your guests' gifts.”
