How to Stay Stylish in Cold Weather

Feature: Quick Read
Words by Eleanor Hibberd

Baby, it’s getting cold outside. In chilly temperatures, our fashion priorities tend to change and getting dressed can feel uninspiring when it becomes a step-and-repeat of wearing your thickest knits and throwing a coat on over the top. Luckily, there are a few subtle ways to freshen up your winter formula for AW24.

Thick knitwear provides the foundation to every winter wardrobe, but how you layer it is the real game-changer. For Autumn/Winter 2024, many brands are leaning into the elegance of taking your cashmere from head to toe. Knitted co-ords from Colombo, Christopher Esber, Le 17 Septembre, Stella McCartney and more offer cosy comfort in a chic, elevated form. Pair them with sleek leather boots and tailored coats, and your casual knits turn into polished street style – and not just for popping to the shops.

When it comes to layering colour, this season is less about statement pops, and more about honing in on a palette. The millefeuille nature of winter dressing allows for plenty of interest through tones and textures, and combining different shades of green, neutrals, brown or burgundy will create an instantly sophisticated, put-together effect. Capes offer a way to do it perfectly – a common trend on the AW24 runways at Chloé, Alaïa, Toteme and more, this layering essential tends to feel more harmonious with your outfit than other coats, which can feel like they’re concealing all the hard work you put in underneath.

Once autumn’s transitional weather has passed, we often focus our attention on coats to see us through the winter – but this season’s proposition of jackets is too good to overlook. From thick, cosy shearling at Victoria Beckham and Loewe to woolly tweed at Stella McCartney and faux fur at Zimmermann, these pieces will soon become the focal point of your look.

Where outerwear is the main defence of winter dressing, loungewear is the soothing salve to come home to after a day of being exposed to the elements. It is the season of hibernation, after all, and we’d be remiss not to point you in the direction of the very best. The new sustainably sourced Harrods collection is made from grade-A cashmere, spun and knitted in Scotland so you know it’s the good stuff. Elsewhere, Lauren Manoogian’s signature neutrals are as chic as they are comfortable, and Olivia von Halle’s matching sets are pyjamas in cunning disguise.
