A. Lange & Söhne

A. Lange & Söhne

A. Lange & Söhne urges its eternally curious devotees to “never stand still”, something you can be sure one of its exquisite German watches won’t do either. The brand itself has never stopped persevering; created in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolf Lange, A. Lange & Söhne lost its factory in the Second World War and took an involuntary 40-year hiatus, only to be reborn at the hand of its founder’s great grandson and fellow horology afficionado, Walter Lange, after the fall of the Berlin wall. Despite this, true perfection of engineering and a determination to achieve the seemingly impossible have always prevailed within its peerless timepieces – just look at the industry-rousing Lange 1, Odysseus and Tourbillon models to witness genuine mastery in motion.

The elaborate tourbillon complication – debuted at the end of the 18th century – overcame gravity’s influence on mechanical running timepieces, improving both accuracy and precision. Its only drawback was that it couldn’t be stopped instantaneously. In 2008, however, A. Lange & Söhne patented a stop-seconds mechanism that enabled devices to be stopped at will, and time to be set to the second.

“There is something that you demand not only of your watch, but also of yourself,” said Walter Lange, founder of the modern-day A. Lange & Söhne. “Never stand still.” Thus, in the wake of the Berlin Wall’s fall, arose a new era of German watchmaking that has since culminated in horology headlines for its pioneering 1815 Moon Phase family and the award-winning Zeitwerk Date collection.

Embodying the prestige and prowess of A. Lange & Söhne’s time-honoured dynasty, the Lange 1 watch family combines traditional elements – a three-quarter plate, screwed gold chains – with a decentralised display arrangement that’s signature to the line. A further signature, the Lange 1’s unique, outsized date, is inspired by the five-minute clock in Dresden’s opera house, Semperoper.
